Balanced Scorecard in Performance Management

The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a strategic performance management tool developed by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early 1990s. Internal Business Processes Perspective: This component examines the efficiency and effectiveness of internal processes that create value for customers. Metrics here might include process improvement, quality, and cycle time. It addresses the question: “What must we excel at?”

Learning and Growth Perspective: This perspective focuses on the organization’s ability to innovate, improve, and learn. It involves employee training, corporate culture, and technological advancement. The key question here is: “How can we continue to improve and create value?”

The Balanced Scorecard enables organizations to monitor and manage performance across these diverse areas, ensuring that all aspects of the business are aligned with the overall strategy. By integrating financial and non-financial metrics, it provides a more balanced and holistic view of organizational performance, facilitating better strategic planning and decision-making.
